A try square, also known as a rafter square, is shaped like an isosceles right-angled triangle with a stop on one leg. The multitude of scales and cut-outs make the try square a multifunctional tool, ideal for marking lines and angles, as well as for scribing and as a saw guide. Try squares are usually made of steel, aluminum, or plastic and are equipped with metric units of measurement (millimeters, centimeters) or imperial units of measurement (inches). Common metric sizes include 18 cm and 30 cm, as well as imperial sizes of 7 inches and 12 inches. The different scales and cut-outs of the try square, as well as the practical stop edge, are particularly well-suited for working with wood – be it in carpentry, joinery, or cabinetmaking. The try square originally comes from America, where it is still mainly used in carpentry for roof construction and roof rafters. Hence the name rafter square. With the try square, the pitch or angle for common rafters, hip rafters, valley rafters, and jack rafters can be determined.
