Reducing the contact pressure and peripheral speed as well as adding grinding oil reduce tool wear and thermal load on the workpiece. Increasing the cutting speed results in a slightly finer surface finish. Increasing the contact pressure makes the surface slightly coarser. The softer the material to be processed, the coarser the surface (when used, for best performance, use at a recommended cutting speed of 15–20 m/s. This achieves an ideal compromise between removal rate, surface quality, thermal load on the workpiece and tool wear.
